- How to Style Boucle
Bouclé is back
Bouclé is back
5 minute read time
It’s soft, warm, inviting, textured and back. Bouclé has returned to our lives and its appearance speaks to pure luxury. Echoing from the most loved fashion houses like that of Chanel, this beautiful and interesting material has taken its rightful place back within the realm of luxury furniture and home aesthetic. Meaning ‘curl’ or ‘loop’, Bouclé is both a yarn and a textile, in which soft yarns, linens or wools are looped and woven together to create a textured, warm and subtly voluminous fabric. Taking on the appearance of a fleecy cloud with its gentle touch, this nubby and diverse material is created to look exactly the way it feels.

Bouclé first entered the world in 1948 when Eero Saarinen, Finnish-American architect and industrial designer sought to create a chair that would not only hold you up but emulate the feeling of being held. Naming his creation the Womb Chair, Saarinen brought bouclé to his design in order to reinstall the feelings of true comfort, luxurious warmth and solace back into furniture. After the splash of Saarinen’s Womb Chair, the textured and unique fabric migrated to the realm of luxury clothing. In 1954 we saw bouclé showcased in the iconic Coco Chanel jacket and skirt suit, setting the tone for practical excellence the material then gained further popularity when worn by Jackie O. Soon after, the world sought to be covered in bouclé. The material was and still very much is beloved by all, as it is the perfect mixture of comfort and style that arouses feelings of opulence and signifies class.

The question should not be why bouclé has returned but rather why it ever left. Although soft to touch, this material is incredibly durable; especially when it’s made by our natural quality fabrics from the finest European mills. Bouclé is known for its versatility, it's heavy enough to soften the edges of chairs, sofas or headboards but gentle enough to be used for pillows, rugs and plush throws. Within the right hands, like those of our experts in luxury, the possible designs and uses of bouclé are endless. Style in furniture is no longer merely the look of an item, but the way it feels and fits into our lives. Your home should not only be beautiful, but a place of solace and happiness, the location to retreat to after a day of business and rush, and that’s why we’ve reincorporated the cosiness of bouclé into our world.

Our Henley Large sofa and Stanley occasional chairs are prime examples of this. Their rounded forms and sweeping curves work elegantly with the bouclé fabric, and the end result in both instances is an inviting item that is hard to resist curling up on.

Bouclé is a material that can be used to create dynamic new textual experiences in your home. Due to its moldability and long-lasting qualities, bouclé is best displayed and used in upholstery to amplify its inviting texture. Styling a bouclé furniture piece comes with ease as the material truly speaks for itself. Subtle enough to easily merge amongst your pre-existing pieces, but diverse enough to bring a new layer of texture, ease and comfort to your space. Due to the nature of how the material is made, the choice of colour is limitless, although bouclé is most commonly seen in neutral tones. Style your new bouclé piece by placing it with more angular and hard pieces to accentuate the cosy, gentle feel of the bouclé. For peripheral objects such as vases, candle holders, and artwork, maintain the same neutral colour palette that’s seen on the bouclé-covered piece for unity within the space; it’s with soft furnishings that you can really get creative.
Or alternatively, lean into the gentle curves of our upholstered bouclé Lloyd Occasional Chairs and model your space with other gentle curved pieces like rounded pillows and rugs and rounded coffee tables; such as our Pierrot Collection Table. Indulge in the aesthetic of texture and maximalism by layering your bouclé pieces with other textural items and accessories as seen with our Aram plates and frames as well as our complimentary Oyster rug.

Where can you find bouclé to include in your own home, today we can see this fabric adding softness to pieces that you truly sink into to like chairs and sofas. Similarly to the durability of the material, when combined with our detail-orientated craftsmen our bouclé pieces are built to last a lifetime. Hand-crafted and designed with you in mind. Our pieces made with bouclé stand as an investment, a material made iconic in both the interior and fashion worlds is here to stay, and when used by our undeniably talented team, your bouclé piece will not only create a beautiful home but an experience of comfort, warmth and softness.
