We have worked with Interior Designer, Laura Hammett for many years and really admire her approach and design aesthetic when it comes to the London Look. This distinctively chic interior aesthetic offers style, sophistication and modern elegance in spades. Indeed, the “London Look” is much coveted among interior designers and those in the know, and for very good reason... But what are the distinctively classic style cues that we should be aware of? What are the elements that require consideration when creating this look? At Larkbury London, we pride ourselves on designing and creating furniture that is eponymous with the London Look, so let’s hone in to understand what makes the style so revered.

Timeless London style is at the very core of this sophisticated but ever-liveable interior design genre, from an often-edited and restrained colour palette, to a carefully curated selection of furniture, lighting, and artwork. Its classic elegance is charming and often bespoke furniture is needed to realise the Interior Designer’s vision. The curved seating arrangement in this entrance hall is stylish and unique and makes for a grand welcoming.

The London Look rose to popularity during the 1930s under the guidance of designers such as Syrie Maugham, (who some might say coined the look), and has been further interpreted during more recent years by designers such as Louise Bradley, Laura Hammett, Sophie Patterson, Bailey London and Taylor Howes to name a few.

British heritage with a modern twist….

Referencing British architecture and heritage is crucial for epitomising the London Look. This means focusing in on architectural features; elegant fireplaces, club fenders, architraves, window sills, paneling and cornices. Without these design elements it is a challenge to achieve the true London Look. It‘s easy to add these key features into modern houses or penthouses – there is always a way to make it work. It‘s also important to have a focal point in the room, which is often an architectural feature, such as a fireplace. If you don’t have a fireplace, you can create your own point of interest by arranging a gallery-style wall or large wall mirror!

Draw upon a neutral colour palette base (shades of white, cream, grey and black), and look to furniture that embodies classic lines but with minimal fuss or unnecessary detail. This is a look that has been born from decades of successful London-based interior designers and decorators - it relies on quality, craftsmanship and heritage to work. However, the London Look does not mean that you can’t make colour work in your interiors, you absolutely can! The core colour palette should utilise these neutral tones, so the larger investment pieces such as sofas, beds and lighting can harness the timeless tones. The finishing touch will be to allow the accents and pops of colour to be added through a selection of accessories, soft furnishings, lampshades, rugs and wall décor.

The upholstery on the back of an accent chair can be in beautiful prints or colours, but not the whole chair. It’s about being subtle and using textures, prints and hints of colour to complement the neutral palette to bring the room to life. This is also a great approach if you are looking to update your interior; ensure the core pieces of furniture are in timeless neutral tones and keep the décor flexible to easily adapt to recent trends - or your personal tastes! Our personal styles do change, which is why a neutral base is key - to last the test of time and ensure it grows with you. The pops of colour are what should be interchangeable, this approach creates a truly flexible interior. What we love about Laura Hammett’s interior design is how the mustard and yellow tones are harmonious, and are picked up across many touch points; from the rug, cushions, occasional chairs, to the ornaments, without overpowering the space.

The metals and wood finishes that you choose for your interiors are extremely significant for achieving the London Look. Soft golds and bronzes are the most timeless, plus they naturally give a sense of warmth to the room. Pairing these with dark woods like walnut and dark ash, adds another level of elegance to the room. Dark woods are extremely timeless and work well for Townhouse and Penthouse vibes! At Larkbury London, we recommend going for lighter woods if you have a country home. Light oak definitely gives a softer feel, and a mix of linen and patterned textures delivers the country look.

The Townhouse look showcases a more glamorous appeal, with complementing fabrics such as silks, velvets and prints, partnered with a combination of dark and light wood, bronze metal finishes and metallic wood. The Penthouse works best with a very timeless aesthetic using a striking combination of dark ash and walnut wood. Marble is also a key material, specifically for cased goods, coffee tables and dining tables. Lighter marble is extremely luxurious and adds an effortless elegance to London Look interiors. We simply love the office pictured above by Laura Hammet and the contrast dark wood for the desk married with a soft cream upholstery on the chairs creates perfect harmony.

Well-proven Layout

When you look deeper into the make-up of the London Look aesthetic, it’s repeated success stems largely from the layout; carefully planned furniture arrangements that rely on symmetry and, importantly, comfort! Pairing elegant sofas and occasional chairs with enough room to manoeuvre around easily, creating a serene and easy living space. The inclusion of matching side tables offer an area to place a stylish table lamp on either side, highly practical for mood lighting, while there is room to display objects and sculptures on a decadent bookshelf. The centre piece table behind the accent chairs in Laura Hammett’s design draws the eye and fills the empty space behind creating a harmonious interior.

The addition of a large area rug can help zone a seating area whilst adding an additional layer of warmth and texture. Different metal finishes, whether brushed chrome, black or marble tops, all complement the upholstery and contribute to The London Look. Each piece of furniture works together with a subtle elegance; the London Look epitomises sophisticated harmony.

Balance and harmony can be created based on the furniture pieces that you choose. For example, smaller occasional chairs in pairs work well opposite a sofa or either side of the fireplace. However, if you have chosen a large L-shape sofa, then a solo wing-back chair in the corner of the room will perfectly complement the sofa and interior. The room has to be synchronised and the furniture pieces have to work well together.

For the dining experience…

Zeroing in on the key factors which form this look, we start with the colour palette. It very quickly becomes apparent that the most successful examples of this aesthetic have a carefully chosen colour grouping. While they largely work in a restrained collection of tones and colours, it is by no means boring! Pull out soothing shades of white and cream from the paint charts, with just enough warmth to bring in a cheerful and uplifting atmosphere. Then, blend these with a selection of neutral, monochromatic shades of beige, dark wood finishes and dashes of metallic reflecting in the upholstery on the back of the dining chairs. Elegant and classic-shaped dining chairs such as the Charles Dining Chairs, which are fully customisable (even down to the metallic stud detailing), work perfectly for the London Look aesthetic. Luxurious fabrics and textures elevate The London Look, creating a beautiful and elegant interior style. Choose from a wide selection of luxurious fabrics from Larkbury London’s extensive fabric library - the largest independent collection in Europe.

A carefully curated collection of accessories, with luxury at their core

Sculptural pieces and accessories may feel like a finishing touch, but they are fundamental to getting the London Look right! Zeroing in on accessories, which can be an excellent way of bringing in a subtle touch of metallic shades and finishes, or softer stone and concrete materials. These contribute to the final touch and offer a level of detail and interest that the London Look relies on. The right curation of objects and artwork can bring character and an all-important indicator of luxury and timeless appeal. Laura Hammett is known for her ability to style a room with accessories to transform any room into a welcoming home. Her sense of style and harmony is unprecedented.

The Master Bedroom

The London Look should transcend across your entire home and the bedroom design can be very creative. Think feature walls behind the bed, whether that be subtle patterned wallpaper or designing a fully panelled headboard, upholstered in a printed silk or soft leather. The two bedroom interiors below from Laura Hammett demonstrate how flexible the London Look can be and large chandeliers over the bed are a key feature in creating an elegant and peaceful interior.
