Introduction

This year at WOW!house, renowned designer Kelly Hoppen CBE unveils a soulful, layered living space brought to life in collaboration with The Sofa & Chair Company. Featuring four bespoke pieces designed exclusively for the Kelly Hoppen x The Sofa & Chair Company collaboration, each crafted to reflect Kelly’s iconic style and our shared commitment to timeless, tailored luxury.

Famed for her globally recognised design language, rooted in calm tonal palettes and tailored minimalism, Hoppen's WOW!house room is a departure into the eclectic, the asymmetrical, and the unexpectedly tactile. In this exclusive interview, she shares the creative process behind the space, the importance of craftsmanship and how emotion is the true measure of great design.

What is the theme of your WOW!house room this year?

"The theme of our room is very eclectic and completely asymmetrical. It is basically a room to sit in, listen to music, have a drink, read books, chill with friends. It's calm, but at the same time, it has a real mix of different textures and styles of furniture."

What kind of emotional experience were you hoping to create for visitors?

"For me, what's important when people walk into this space at WOW! is to feel that they've arrived home. That they just want to sit down, put their feet up, they want to put on a beautiful piece of music, grab a drink, open a book, or just chat to people.

I love the carpet I designed, which has this massive big border. It's kind of retro, but at the same time, because it's asymmetric, people wouldn’t expect that from me. I love that wherever you sit and wherever you look, there's something different to engage with and to give you that experience in the space."

“What's brilliant about WOW!house is the fact that we don't really have a real client. So when I don't have a real client and I just design, there are no boundaries. You literally go with the flow." - Kelly Hoppen

Your rooms often tell a story. How did that come to life in this space?

"For me, the beginning of this space was always about the panelling - it reminded me of my grandfather’s office in South Africa, where he had this amazing Biedermeier-type panelling. I've always loved it, always referenced it, and decided I wanted to do that.

But I wanted to mix it up with powder-coated white walls and also some detailing on the wall. Then, when you hang your art and photography, you kind of cross over those lines. So there's always a point of reference, it's slightly off, but that's what kind of makes it work."

How did you approach furniture design in this space?

"I suppose the difference in textures. People would expect sofas filled with cushions, but in fact, we have just one beautiful, big, fantastic red cushion on the back of the sofa that we designed with the The Sofa & Chair Company.

Then you've got this amazing ottoman with a kind of old-fashioned damask fabric, but very modern in its own way. We’ve used a tassel fringing, but done at a very high height. Again, doing something it’s not normally supposed to do.

Then there's a kind of ottoman that is double-sided. So you can be sitting, talking to people, looking at the sofa or a chair—but you can easily sit on the other side while you're listening to music and someone’s pouring you a drink.

And equally, you can sit in the corner where you've got this amazing retro chair, which is just a place to sit and watch what everyone else is doing in the space."

Upholstery plays a big part in your interiors. Can you speak to its role in this space?

"Upholstery is a really important part of a room and a space because it's soft. When you have a space, you’ve got hard and soft, you have to balance those two things together.

Equally, it’s important to choose the right fabrics. The sofa is so streamlined, the way in which the joins are done and the curve of the arm. It’s sort of straight, but it’s curved. The pelmets, the joins, the proportions, all of these things are really important."

“I’ve worked with the Sofa & Chair Company for many years. They've recently done some bespoke pieces for me at home. What I love about them is their workshop, they really want you involved." - Kelly Hoppen

What do you hope people take away from this room?

"What I’m hoping that visitors will take away from this room at WOW! is just that they feel at home in the space.

They can’t put their finger on what it is that’s making them feel that way - and for me, that’s the best. If somebody’s in a space and they can’t work out what it is that makes them feel special, it means that all of it is working.

I really would encourage people to come and look at WOW! and see all of the designers and see everything that’s been done. It’s an amazing experience, something not to be missed."
